2月6日がブログの日だと知っていましたか？私は初めて聞いたので、本日ブログを投稿したいとおもいます。
今回は『シャーペン』についてご紹介したいと思います。 タイトルに書かれているように、実はシャーペンという単語は「Japanglish/ジャパングリッシュ」(和製英語)であり、アメリカには存在しておりません。「シャーペン」はアメリカでは「mechanical pencil/メカニカル・ペンシル」（機械的鉛筆）と呼ばれています。呼び方以外には、物自体の機能や見た目に違いはまったくありません。由来につきましては、アメリカによって考案されたシャーペン第1号の商品名が「エバーシャープ」であり、そこから→「エバー・レディー・シャープペンシル」→「シャープペンシル」→「シャーペン」と呼ばれるようになったそうです。
繰り返しになりますが、「シャーペン」とは日本で作られた和製英語であり、アメリカでは「mechanical pencil」、すなわち 機械的な鉛筆となります。なら、「シャーペン」を直訳したらどのような意味になるのでしょうか？恐らく「シャープ」（尖っている）＋「ペンシル」（鉛筆）になりますが、アメリカで「シャープペンシル」を誰かに頼んだら尖った鉛筆を持ってきてくれるのではないでしょうか。。。

他の国の呼び方：
- イギリス:propelling pencil /プロペリング・ペンシル
- インド:pen pencil/ペン・ペンシル
- アメリカ:lead pencil /レッドペンシル（と呼ばれることもあります）
- オーストラリア: clutch pencil /クラッチペンシル

There are no “shāpen” in the United States!
If you are reading the title, you must be quite surprised to learn that the United States does not have shāpen. That is because, while the country does not have shāpen, it does have the “mechanical pencil”. You might be asking to yourself, what is the difference? To be quite honest, there isn’t a difference! It is a just a different word for the same thing.

As you can probably guess by now, shāpen is a term that was created in Japan and in the U.S. we actually use the term “mechanical pencil”. So what does shāpen mean If translated directly? Most likely it would be “sharp” and “pencil” combined, which if you asked for one in the U.S. would receive a finely sharpened pencil. While this is good, it is most likely not what you will want.

What are they called in other countries?:
- UK:propelling pencil
- India:pen pencil
- American English: sometimes called the lead pencil
- Australia: clutch pencil
So if you ever have to ask for a shāpen in the U.S. make sure to ask for mechanical pencil!🇺🇸
