4月のブログでは、「春分」がアメリカでVernal Equinox (バーナル・エクイノックス)と呼ばれていて、「昼と夜の時間が同じ春の日」という意味があるということをご紹介させていただきました。更に、ブログの最後に「春分の日」と同じように、 二十四節気（にじゅうしせっき）の一つでもある「夏至」（げし）については、夏のブログにアップすると予告させていただきましたので、今回は夏至についてお話をしたいと思います♪

夏至は英語でSummer solstice(サマー・ソルスティス)と呼ばれています。 毎年6月21日〜7月7日頃にあたり、今年は6月21日でした。一般的に夏至と言うときは、この初日を指すことが多く、この日、北半球では１年のうちで昼の時間が最も長くなり、各地で夏至祭が催されます。冬至（とうじ）は毎年12月21日〜1月5日頃にあたり、今年は12月22日（木）〜2023年1月5日（木）までです。カレンダーには初日である12月22日（木）に冬至と記されていることが多く、この日、北半球では昼が一番短くなります。

夏至・冬至は日本で知られていますが、春分の日や、秋分の日とは違って祝日ではありません。その理由としてはお彼岸という古くからの風習が関係するようです。。。（詳しい説明は下記リンクをご確認ください）

Winter solstice, and the summer solstice, typically occur on December 21 and June 21, respectively each year. While both days are recognized each year in Japan, they are quite different from the Vernal Equinox. This is because the Vernal Equinox is celebrated as a public holiday, while the day for solstices are not.
