アートリンガル外語学院の今月のテーマが「Pet」なので、少しこの英単語についてお話をしたいと思います。
皆さんの中にペットを飼っている方々も多いと思います。
まず、『ペット』の語源の由来について紹介しようと思います。
ペットの語源は英語で、名詞として使う場合は人間に飼われている犬、猫、鳥などの愛玩動物のことをペットと言います。ここまでは日本でも知られているのですが、実は動詞でも使うことができます！
動詞として使う場合は、「撫でる」です。つまり、「I want to pet your dog」といえば、「私はあなたの犬を撫でたい」という意味になります。ペットをペットする、単語の意味を理解していない場合ややこしくなりそうですね💧そしてご自身の飼っている犬、猫、または鳥を「petting」(愛撫)する時、必ず愛情を持って撫でてあげることが重要となります。愛情無しでは「petting」(愛撫)ではなく、ただの「rubbing」（こする）となってしまいます。ゆっくりでも、しっかりでも、素早くても、愛情を注げるならそれは「petting」となります♪

使い方の例：
- I will pet the dog.
私は犬を撫でます。
- I am petting the dog.
私は犬を撫でています。
- I petted the dog yesterday.
私は昨日犬を撫でました。

The true meaning behind the word “PET”
※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※
You might know about the word “pet”, which describes animals you take care of in your home such as a dog, cat, or bird. But did you know that the word pet can also be an action! That’s right!
When you stroke your dog, cat, or bird, that is the action of “petting”. It is important that you infuse the action with affection otherwise, you will just be rubbing. You can pet slowly or quickly, gently or firmly.🐶🐱🐤
Remember, if you are going to use the action “pet” ,try to use it with animals.
For example:
- I will pet the dog.
- I am petting the dog.
- I petted the dog yesterday.
While you can use it on non-living objects, it is better to use the word “rub”.
