“アニメ” (anime) isn’t a word that is just used in Japan but is also known all around the world. In fact, anime is so popular that a majority of shows often appear in other countries, some even being broadcast with translations the very same day they are released in Japan. But did you know that the word “anime” isn’t used for all animation shows like in Japan but is used specifically for animation that is produced in Japan or having a similar style. Yes, that’s right!
So, what are animated shows or movies in the U.S. or other parts of the world called? The word “cartoon” or “cartoons” are typically used to describe a non-realistic drawing or animation. For the most part, cartoons offer comedic value and are associated with more playful content. Some of the more iconic characters seen in Japan like Snoopy, SpongeBob, The Simpsons are just some examples of cartoons.
