Respect for the Aged Day

In an age where young people are most prominent and the elderly are often forgotten, Japan has managed to keep shine a spotlight on the older generation by celebrating them with Respect for the Aged Day otherwise known as 敬老の日.

This is a national holiday celebrated in September that first started in the 1940s and became widely popular, spreading across Japan and later being made into an official holiday. Perhaps more impressive is those that reach the milestone of turning 100 will be honored by the Japanese government. They will receive a commemorative sake cup and a congratulatory letter.

This is truly a very special way to celebrate the elderly and is quite unique.
